(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 3/22/2023) – On Thursday, March 23, the Muslim community in Oklahoma and worldwide will begin the month-long fast of Ramadan (RAHM-a-daan). This holy month will be welcomed with community Iftar dinners, service projects, and outreach to help Oklahomans better understand the Muslim community.

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other sensual pleasures from before dawn until sunset. The fast increases spirituality, discipline, self-restraint, and generosity while obeying God’s commandments. Fasting (with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of Islam’s “five pillars”.

Additionally, CAIR Oklahoma will host a Ramadan Day of Service in coordination with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and a Young Professionals Iftar.

“Ramadan is a month in which we seek to improve our spiritual health while building bridges of peace and understanding with our neighbors,” said CAIR-OK Executive Director Adam Soltani. “We are committed to reaching out to our fellow Oklahomans to continue setting a strong example of what interfaith love and cooperation look like.”

The end of Ramadan will be marked by communal prayers called “Eid ul-Fitr,” or Feast of the Fast-Breaking, on April 21 at Mosques and Islamic Centers throughout the state.
