On Monday, May 11, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK) and Muslim community leaders will offer comments following the Edmond City Council’s decision on the proposed expansion of the Islamic Society of Edmond.

This is the second time that the issue will go before the Edmond City Council after previously being denied over concerns for parking. Monday’s hearing comes one month after the Islamic Society of Edmond was vandalized in a possible hate crime.

“Edmond’s Muslim community is an integral part of the city and approval of this expansion would be welcomed as a positive signal at a time when we have witnessed so much hostility and unfounded fear toward Islam and Muslims,” said CAIR-OK Executive Director Adam Soltani.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
