The resolution’s language condemns racism and prejudice against the Asian-American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community throughout American history, including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 189, and the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. It describes the rise in discrimination and hate crimes against the AAPI community since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, including verbal harassment, shunning, and physical attacks.

“This is an important action in showing solidarity with Oklahoma’s Asian community. We are grateful at a time like this, our legislature can put aside partisanship and come together in support of minorities targeted by hate,” said Government Affairs Director Lani R. Habrock.

“Although we still have a lot of work to do in protecting all Oklahoma’s communities from hate and bigotry, this resolution, authored by the state’s three representative of Asian descent, shows that the legislature can come together to support our AAPI neighbors and family,” said CAIR-OK Civil Rights Director Veronica Laizure, a Korean-American adoptee.

CAIR-OK is a chapter of America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
