The month of August is here and that means that Congress is in recess. During the summer recess, congresspeople return to their home states to spend time with their constituents. If you’ve ever wanted to meet your Oklahoma Congressional delegation, this month is one of your best opportunities!

Below, you’ll find information on how to request a personal or group meeting with your Congressman and Senator and some resources to help you prepare for your conversations. At your meetings, we encourage you to advocate on state and national issues of importance including: opposing the Trump administration’s “Muslim Ban” executive orders; rejecting religious profiling and questioning at the borderopposing limits on free speech and boycotts; and, recognizing the accomplishments of U.S. Muslims.

If your congressperson does not have a town hall scheduled in your district, we suggest you call to request a face-to-face meeting or invite them to visit with your community.

Never called your congressperson before? Here’s a call script to help guide you!

“Hi, my name is [ ] and I’m a constituent of the district. My address is [ ]. I heard that Congressman [OR] Senator [ ] was going to be in town during the recess and I am calling to ask if he is planning to hold a town hall while he is here. I would like to talk to him about what is going on in Washington. If he is not holding a town hall, will there be an opportunity for me to meet with him in his office?”

Community leaders are also encouraged to hold candidate forums for those running for public office at which Muslim voters may ask questions of those seeking public office.

Now is your opportunity to make sure the Oklahoma Congressional delegation hears directly from their constituents. Your voice can make all the difference.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Government Affairs Director Anna Facci at 405-286-6009 Ext. 3 or afacci@cair.com.
