Biography
Connie Johnson is running for Senate District 48. She has previously been state senator for District 48 from 2005 to 2014. Johnson advocates for abolishing the death penalty for sentence reform that ensures punishments are just and proportional. She also wants to abolish private prisons and proposes redirecting funds currently spent on private prisons to community-based programs that address the root causes of crime. She is also a supporter of the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. Johnson opposes any legislative attempts to further criminalize immigrant communities and will fight for policies that reflect compassion, respect, and justice for all residents, regardless of their origin.
Johnson believes in the critical need to expand mental health services to address the diverse needs of all Oklahomans, particularly those who have served our nation. Her approach is geared towards building a more comprehensive health care system that not only treats illness but also promotes overall well-being and prevents future health crises. She is also unwavering in her commitment to championing women’s rights to make informed decisions about their own bodies. She supports comprehensive legislation that safeguards and enhances access to reproductive healthcare, ensuring that decisions are made by women themselves, not dictated by restrictive and punitive laws.
Her education plans focus on depoliticizing educational policy, protecting academic freedoms, and ensuring that schools are places of learning, not political indoctrination. She is committed to fighting against Walters’ destructive policies and advocating for a system that genuinely serves the educational needs and rights of all students. She supports the eradication of school lunch debt, advocating for policies that ensure every child receives a nutritious meal at school without financial burden.
In the legislature, Johnson will advocate for policies that protect tribal sovereignty and promote economic and cultural prosperity. She aims to forge partnerships that respect the autonomy of tribal governments while working together to address shared challenges, from environmental stewardship to economic development. She is also a steadfast ally of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, advocating for robust equal rights and protections under the law.
