(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 6/6/2018) – On Friday, June 8, the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oklahoma) will hold its Fourth Annual Ramadan Iftar, or fast-breaking meal, with Elected Officials (7 p.m. at NOAH’s Event Center in Oklahoma City).

This year’s Ifar will feature a keynote speech by Rep. Forrest Bennett (D-92, Oklahoma City), as well as remarks from Rep. George E. Young Sr. and Representative Jason Lowe.
“Ramadan is a time for religious reflection for Muslims. Hosting our annual Ramadan Iftar with our elected leaders and community partners in this blessed month gives us a way to share one of the most anticipated and celebrated months in the Islamic calendar,” said CAIR-OK Community Outreach Fellow Natasha Saya.
CAIR-OK Government Affairs Director Lani Habrock said: “The Ramadan Iftar with our legislators is an opportunity for our elected officials and the Muslim community to meet face-to-face and engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can work together to build a more diverse and prosperous Oklahoma.”
Ramadan (rahm-a-DAHN) is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other sensual pleasures from the break of dawn until sunset. The fast is performed in order to increase self-discipline, self-restraint, and generosity, and the community is encouraged to increase their volunteerism, charity, and prayer. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca. An Iftar (IF-tar) is the meal eating to break the fast at the end of each day, after sundown.
The end of Ramadan is marked by communal prayers and celebration called “Eid ul-Fitr”(EED ull-FITTr), or Feast of the Fast-breaking, on or about June 15.
