(TULSA, OK 09/06/2019) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations Oklahoma Chapter (CAIR-OK) applauds the decision by the Tulsa Police Department in terminating a recent Tulsa Police Academy graduate after discovering the officer had previously posted anti-Muslim, Islamophobic posts to a personal social media account.

“Tulsa Police officers are tasked with a difficult duty of protecting the people of Tulsa and ensuring the safety of all citizens while being morally grounded and putting community first,” said CAIR-OK Executive Director Adam Soltani. “In a city that has seen a history of concern with regards to the relationship between police and minority groups, we are glad to see the Chief of Police and the Tulsa Police Department do the right thing in terminating someone that used social media to propagate hate and misinformation about Islam & Muslim.”

CAIR-OK provides trainings and other resources for any state law enforcement agency wishing to educate its officers on Islam and Muslims in Oklahoma and how to be culturally sensitive.

“Unfortunately, there are many people out there who harbor bias and prejudice against Muslims,” said Soltani. “While everyone is entitled to their own views, someone in a position of power and responsibility — such as a police officer — should be held to a higher standard of conduct and must be prepared to protect all the citizens of his or her community.”

He said CAIR offers a booklet, called “A Law Enforcement Official’s Guide to the Muslim Community,” which outlines basic information about Islamic beliefs that are relevant to law enforcement. It also covers issues such as the rights of Muslim law enforcement officers, religiously-sensitive techniques for body searches, proper etiquette for entering Muslim homes, and advice on outreach to the Islamic community.
